In 2005-2006, in a rare foray away from the field of astronomy, I plunged into Raman spectroscopy—a type of spectroscopy that allows scientists to identify different molecules by the light they emit when stimulated with laser radiation. I built a Raman system by constructing a what I call a “Raman head” that attaches either to my Littrow or to my classical spectrograph.
